Our kantha products
Kantha is an embroidery form which is widespread in West Bengal in India.
Kantha stitches are traditionally used for embroidering quilts and women in Bengal typically reuse old saris and sew them in layers to make light blankets, bedspreads and scarves.
Kantha is still the most popular form of embroidery among rural women in Bengal and the traditional form of kantha embroidery is done with single stitches where the seamstress sews rows of tiny stitches from end to end.
The embroidered carpets and pieces of clothing have many uses, including carpets, bedspreads, shawls and pillows, the best examples are the entire carpet covered with beautiful motifs of flowers, animals, birds or artistic patterns.
Sewing in the kantha technique gives the rugs a slightly wavy effect and at MASALA we use the kantha rugs for a wider range of garments such as women's outerwear, bedding and a wide range of home textiles
