What is Ajrakh print?

Ajrakh is a traditional form of hand-block printing that originates from the Kutch region of Gujarat and Barmer in Rajasthan, in western India. The name Ajrakh is believed to stem from the Arabic word Azrak, meaning blue – a reference to the distinctive indigo color that dominates many of the classic patterns.

What is special about Ajrakh is the combination of hand-carved wooden blocks, natural dyes, and a very extensive dyeing process. Each pattern is built up layer by layer with great precision, giving the fabric an almost mirror-symmetrical structure.

A process with up to 20 steps

The production of Ajrakh is among the most time-consuming forms of block printing.

The process includes, among other things:

• washing and preparing the cotton
• treatment with natural binders
• repeated hand printing with carved wooden blocks
• dyeing in natural indigo
• dyeing with plant roots, pomegranate peel, and other natural ingredients
• several washing, drying, and dyeing processes between each layer

Depending on the design, the process can consist of 14–20 separate steps and take several weeks before the fabric is finished.

Natural colors with depth

Traditionally, Ajrakh is made with natural dyes. Indigo provides the characteristic blue hues, while iron, natural plant extracts, alum, and roots create black, red, and brown colors.

It is precisely these natural colors that give the fabric a vibrant depth that cannot be achieved with industrial printing. Each textile becomes slightly unique because the colors develop differently during the many dye baths.

Craftsmanship with history

Ajrakh prints are still made by artisan families, where techniques have been passed down through generations. Many families have worked with Ajrakh for several hundred years and consider the craft an important part of their cultural heritage.

Each wooden block is hand-carved, and every single print is manually placed on the fabric. It requires great experience and precision to achieve the perfect repetitions that characterize authentic Ajrakh.
