Chindi Rugs – beauty made from remnants

A chindi rug is not made from new fabric but produced from textile remnants. Strips of old textiles – saris, dresses, shirts – woven or braided together into something entirely new. That's chindi. And it is one of the most beautiful examples of what hands and patience can create out of nothing.

What does chindi mean?

"Chindi" is a Hindi word meaning "strip" or "patch." In India, the chindi technique has been used for generations to recycle textile remnants from tailor shops and households. What couldn't be used for clothing became rugs. Nothing went to waste.

Today, chindi rugs are recognized worldwide for their colorful, vibrant expression and their sustainable origin. But behind every rug still lies the same simple philosophy: reuse what you have and make it beautiful.

Handmade from top to bottom

A genuine chindi rug is 100% handmade. The textile remnants are cut into strips, sorted by color, and woven or braided on a traditional loom by skilled artisans. The process is time-consuming and requires an eye for colors and patterns – because even though the material is recycled, the result is anything but accidental.

At MASALA, we carefully select our chindi rugs. We work with workshops in India where we know the production conditions, and where the artisans behind the rugs receive fair payment for their work.

Each rug is unique

Because chindi rugs are made from recycled materials, no two rugs are alike. The colors, patterns, and textures vary from rug to rug – depending on what textiles were available and which artisan wove it. This makes each rug an original piece – not a copy of something else.

It is precisely this uniqueness that we value at MASALA. We do not seek perfection in an industrial sense. We seek authenticity – and we find that in chindi.

Sustainability on the floor

A chindi rug is one of the most sustainable choices you can make for your home. It is made from textiles that would otherwise end up as waste. It is produced without chemicals or synthetic materials. And it is made to last – year after year, wash after wash.

When you place a MASALA chindi rug on your floor, you do more than decorate your home. You make a conscious choice about what you want in your life – and what you want to support.
