Unique vintage sari Kantha blankets

Discover our colorful Kantha blankets, handcrafted in India from beautiful vintage saris. Each blanket consists of carefully selected layers of recycled textiles, sewn together with the characteristic Kantha stitches – a traditional craft technique with roots in India.

The old saris give each blanket its very own combination of colors, patterns, and small traces of previous life. Therefore, there is only one copy of each design.

Use a Kantha blanket as a bedspread, over the sofa, or as a decorative and colorful element in your home. A unique piece of Indian textile craftsmanship, where recycling, history, and handmade details meet.

There is something special about a piece of kantha textile. Not just because it's beautiful – but because it carries stories. Layer upon layer of old saris, sewn together by hand by women who have given new life to what would otherwise have been discarded. That is kantha. And it is the core of what we do at MASALA.

What is kantha?

Kantha is a traditional sewing technique from Bengal – both Indian West Bengal and Bangladesh. The word "kantha" simply means "patched cloth" in Sanskrit, and the technique dates back several hundred years. Originally, women sewed kantha blankets from worn-out saris and dhoti fabric, which they layered on top of each other and stitched together with a simple running stitch technique.

What emerged was not just a warm blanket – it was a work of art. The patterns that appear in the stitching are unique to each craftswoman. No two kantha pieces are alike, because no two women sew alike.

Upcycling before upcycling was a word

Kantha is, in its essence, upcycling in its purest form. Old saris – with their own stories, colors, and wear – are transformed into something new and beautiful. It is sustainability, not as a marketing term, but as a way of life that has existed for generations.

At MASALA, it is precisely this mindset that we build upon. We work with kantha textiles made from upcycled saris from India. Each piece is handcrafted, hand-washed, and hand-selected – by us and by the women who have sewn it.

The women behind the craft

Behind each kantha piece sits a woman – often in a small village in West Bengal – with a needle and thread and hours of patience. It is not factory work. It is craftsmanship in the most literal sense of the word. We at MASALA ensure that the women who make our textiles work under proper conditions and receive fair pay for their time and talent.

When you buy a kantha blanket, kantha quilt, or other kantha product from MASALA, you are not just supporting a beautiful product – you are supporting a tradition, a woman, and a more sustainable way of consuming.

Kantha in your home

Kantha textiles are incredibly versatile. As a bedspread, sofa throw, wall decoration, or lightweight summer duvet – they fit in everywhere and add warmth, color, and character to any room. And because each piece is unique, it is also a guarantee that no one else has exactly the same as you.
